Traffic Information
Using technology to keep the public informed about road conditions

The UK's road network carries extremely high volumes of traffic, particularly at peak times. With car ownership increasing alongside longer commuting distances, these traffic volumes are expected to increase, causing congestion and delays.

Whilst the ideal solution may be to build new roads and increase the capacity, this is not the most practical solution; to make journeys better for the traveling public, accurate and appropriate information is needed, allowing a driver to make alternative journey plans or to better understand the conditions of the road ahead.

For several years, Speed Check Services have been providing Traffic Information systems, both for immediate information feedback to drivers and strategic information that is sent to regional control centres.

This information is generated from a number of sources, including Count & Classification devices and Automatic Number Plate Recognition (ANPR) systems. As new data capture technologies become available, SCS continues to develop innovative Traffic Information Solutions

Journey Time Advice Systems and Delay Advice Systems capture data from vehicles traveling through a particular section of road. Look-up tables allow delays to be calculated and a Variable Message Sign (VMS) displays the appropriate information to the road user, as well as sending the data to a central control centre.
